MSc Elective  Course

Master of Science (MSc) Elective Course on Disasters, Environment and Disaster Risk Reduction

In order to influence the next generation of policymakers and decision makers, PEDRR is working with Cologne University of Applied Sciences' Center for Natural Resources and Development (CNRD) and its global network of universities, in developing a Master of Science (MSc) Elective Course on Disasters, Environment and Risk Reduction. The Course module consists of four main blocks that are divided into approximately 30 sessions and 50 hours of coursework, corresponding to 3-5 credits:

Block 1: Elements of Disaster Risk Reduction (15 hours)
Block 2: Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction or Eco-DRR (15 hours)
Block 3: Eco-DRR instruments and approaches (15 hours)
Block 4: Mainstreaming Environment and DRR (5 hours)

Course topics include disaster risk trends, ecosystem management tools for DRR, climate change and Ecosystem-based Adaptation, and mainstreaming into development, among others. Curriculum development was undertaken by UNEP, IUCN, UNU and WWF, in collaboration with Cologne University and CNRD partners.

The Course is proposed as an elective course to existing MSc degrees such as in geography, natural resources management, water resources management and IWRM, coastal zone management, agricultural sciences, urban planning and environmental sciences. The main guiding philosophy of this Course is “learning by doing”, combining theory with a lot of practice, whether through examples and case study analysis, role play exercises, individual research, group assignments and other interactive teaching methods.

CNRD universities from 10 countries (Chile, Mexico, Brazil, Egypt, Jordan, Vietnam, Nepal, Indonesia, Mozambique and Germany) are collaborating with PEDRR in developing and rolling-out the Course, which provides a standard core curriculum that can be modified and adapted depending on each university or institution’s experiences and needs. A Training of Instructors from these 10 countries will be taking place on 25-25 August at Cologne University, with a view to rolling-out the Course in winter term 2012 (see also Events page).
